Importance of humanized and individualized care in dentistry for children with congenital heart disease

Children with congenital heart disease are at greater risk of oral health problems such as tooth decay and periodontal disease than children without heart disease. Proper planning is necessary for both preventive and curative procedures for these patients, as they have an increased risk of infective endocarditis due to S. mutans. These patients and their guardians have several challenges in dealing with the diagnosis, leading to greater anxiety in the dental office. This study therefore consists of a narrative literature review, with the aim of guiding the dental surgeon in relation to congenital heart diseases and the relationship with dental consultations, taking into account humanized care for the patient and their guardians, focusing the importance of prevention guidelines. There are several pertinent factors in the care of patients with heart disease, from taking a good history and clinical examination to an appropriate behavioral approach to the routine of these patients.
