Abstract

Increasingly stringent beauty standards are forcing oral health professionals to strive to meet human desires. A less invasive option to improve the appearance of a smile is teeth whitening, which has become widely used. Various techniques and materials exist for dental whitening, all of which can cause dentin sensitivity during treatment, a major patient complaint. This has led to the commercialization of desensitizing agents to mitigate this problem. Some studies show that these desensitizing agents reduce the effectiveness of whitening gels by obstructing dentinal tubules. However, as same whitening agents, desensitizing agents also have different application techniques and timing. Even though sensitivity is subjective and unpredictable, the desensitizing needed agents before, during, and after treatment should be evaluated. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the influence of desensitizing agents used with dental whitening gels.
